Throughout its history, Portugal has presented a remarkable
musical output: as to sacred music, in the scope of its “Golden
Age” of the 16th and 17th centuries, around cathedrals
and their polyphonic schools; as regards the typical vilancicos,
of a religious or secular nature, and sometimes influenced
by the African or South-American language and rhythm of the
populations under the rule of Portugal at the time; concerning
the opera, under an intense Italian influence, since the beginning
of the 18th century.
Ibermusica.net aims at disclosing some of the most significant
works of the Portuguese and Iberian music, still often thoroughly
unknown, at all times with the highest standards of musicological
and graphic quality.
